Traditionally permaculture has been taught outside the Australian Qualifications Framework and students have thus received no recognition by government or most TAFE institutes and universities. Some permaculture courses have been recognised by the Permaculture Institute, but this has not conferred general recognition as a tertiary student. Whilst the tried and true Permaculture Design Certificate course remains available, things have changed with the recent accreditation of Permaculture Certificates I-IV and the Diploma of Permaculture. This means that people can now learn permaculture with full recognition as tertiary students for the purposes of Austudy, Youth Allowance etc. TAFE students and others in the Vocational Education sector will be able to take permaculture units as electives in other Vocational Education and Training courses and they will be able to use units from other TAFE study as electives towards permaculture qualifications. It will become easier for primary producers to
obtain
FARMBIZ funding for permaculture training and it will open the door
to schools wishing to teach permaculture as part of a range of accredited
curricula. Pathways to university will also open up.
The Accredited Training Reference Group of Permaculture
International has approved courses and processes for the training and registration
of Accredited Permaculture Trainers and the various units making up the
courses have been registered under the Australian Qualifications Framework.
