MEDIA RELEASE 2 Sept09
As climate-change accelerates, oil and water supplies
dwindle and world food security looks more tenuous, the call for a new
system of living grows louder. South Australians will have the opportunity
to learn a complete system for sustainable living this summer with David
Holmgren co-originator of the permaculture concept. David will be
part of an experienced team of tutors presenting a public course on this
remarkable system which promises design skills for self sufficiency, recycling,
wind and solar power, gardens bulging with diversity, sustainable orchards,
alternative economics, fresh, organic food for local communities, sustainable
approaches to water management, housing, waste utilisation, economics and
neighbourhood design.
David is an author, designer and consultant who
has developed his own self-sufficient property at Hepburn Springs in Victoria
where he lives a life of low environmental impact but worldwide social
impact.
The venue for the course is the learning centre
at The Food Forest, a 15 hectare permaculture farm at Gawler. Australia's
top organic property in 2003, twice Premier’s Food Award Winner and the
Nature Foundation’s Environmentally Responsible Business Leadership Award
winner in 2005, the farm is a model for successful property and garden
design and provides fresh, organic food throughout the Adelaide bioregion
including a regular stall at the Adelaide Showground Farmers Market.
The course is residential, allowing participants
to fully immerse themselves in new concepts and ways of living, but takes
place over a number of weeks, mainly on weekends so that family and commitments
can be maintained and a personal project undertaken. Much of the learning
will be through participative activities and field trips to top permaculture
properties. The course starts on Jan 22. Further information is available
