Straw-bale Building Workshop
Building a Sustainable Home with Straw-bales

Straw-bale construction has been hailed as one of the most environmentally responsible systems for southern Australia where heat in summer and cold in winter can both be excluded by the outstanding insulating qualities of straw-bales,  saving substantially on heating and cooling costs. Keeping the summer heat out will be particularly relevant in the coming decades as the Greenhouse Effect takes hold.

The materials to build straw-bale houses, studios, barns and garden walls are easy to source and the product is environmentally friendly, beautiful and organic in form. It is also strong, stable and council approvable.

Strawbale home owner Annemarie Brookman of The Food Forest, Gawler, says that the average person can build straw-bale walls with relatively little training and this gives many people the opportunity to be involved in building their own home or studio.

A weekend workshop will be held on the 17th and 18th of  May at The Food Forest in Gawler. Principal tutor will be Lance Kairl, SA’s most experienced straw-bale builder.
