			<description>&lt;p&gt;Adelaide families now have the opportunity buy fresh food directly from producers from all over SA at the Adelaide Showground Farmers Market. The 20,000 strong crowd that turned up for the farmers market which formed the centrepiece of the 'Go Organic Festival' in September in 2005 encouraged the Royal Agricultural and Horticultural Society (RAHS) to back the foundation of a permanent farmers market by a not-for-profit community organisation. The market opened on October 1st 2006 with a massive crowd of 10,000 shoppers and runs each Sunday (apart from the weeks of the Royal Show) from 9am-1pm.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;In the tradition of farmers markets, it is a food market at which both food producers and consumers can get a fair price for food produced in SA and support regional and sustainable land use. The market guarantees that you buy direct from the producer and is known for its strict adherence to the ethics of farmers markets which now number in their thousands worldwide as families seek to avoid overstored food from major retailers who pass on meagre prices to farmers. In Australia, the farmers market movement is represented by the &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.farmersmarkets.org.au&quot; target=&quot;_blank&quot;&gt;Australian Farmers Market Association&lt;/a&gt; and SA's peak body, the SA Farmers Market Association, will soon be launched.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The Adelaide Showground location is superb, with a major bike trail, the Glenelg tram line, a major rail line, numerous bus routes all converging to make it one of the most accessible sites in Adelaide. Parking is also easy and cheap.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;120 producers offer their extraordinarily diverse products (everything from oysters to almonds and bread to boysenberries!). It is accessed from the car parks at the Leader Street (southern) end of the Showgrounds.  &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;The tour will start with a brief introduction to Permaculture, the design system for sustainable living. We will then take you on a walk inspecting revegetation work along the Gawler River, vegetable gardens and poultry.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;We will have a look at the passive solar, energy efficient buildings, including strawbale buildings, solar hot water and photovoltaic systems, rainwater catchment, composting toilet and reedbed systems. We then move on to the sanctuary where native vegetation adds to the diversity amongst the production orchards.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;We will explain the growing of many of our fruit and nut species such as figs, apples, pears, carobs, pistachios, and grapes.&lt;/p&gt;

Developed in Australia in the late 70’s by Bill Mollison and David Holmgren, it is now taught in over 100 countries. Hundreds of thousands of people have graduated from Design Courses and are using this tool to build resilience and diversity into their lives, their local communities &amp;amp; in the workplace.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Permaculture can be employed by anyone, &lt;strong&gt;whatever profession or skill&lt;/strong&gt;, on any scale, from balconies and backyards to farms, factories, businesses, schools and cities anywhere on the planet and in any climate. It offers a sustainable landscape, dignified human-scale living and self-reliant children who have the confidence to design a sustainable future for themselves.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;It is based on three ethics: Care of the Earth, Care of Community and Acceptance of personal responsibility for consumption and population. Many practical design principles, technologies and strategies have evolved to make permaculture one of the most accessible and dynamic solutions to the issues we face in the 21st Century.  David Suzuki dubs permaculture 'Australia's greatest intellectual export'.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h3&gt;Permaculture Design Certificate&lt;/h3&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;em&gt;The Food Forest offers the 10 day course, spread out over three teaching blocks, roughly 2 weeks apart.&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;This 10 day intensive design course will present you with an opportunity to consider your life in a new light and give you increased confidence and many skills needed to design a sustainable and meaningful place for your future.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;You will work with a group of motivated fellow students with diverse skills and backgrounds and learn through lectures, practical activities, small group work, case studies, DVDs, field trips and games. In addition to our experienced teaching team, you will have access to a wide range of printed and digital resources.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The extended format of the course is designed to cause minimum disruption to other parts of your life. It will allow you to absorb and practise skills from one learning block before moving on to the next. However the residential aspect is important, as it helps you become fully immersed in learning about sustainable living.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Sessions are scheduled on most evenings, but we finish at 5pm on the last day of each block. With roughly 2 weeks in between each teaching block (depending on how the dates fall each year). The first teaching block is 5 days, the second is 3 days and the last, 2 days. There are usually 3 days which are ‘weekday working days’; these may need some planning to take off ‘normal work’. Whilst this format may seem less than ideal if you are from a distant location, many participants use it as an opportunity to visit permaculture projects or WWOOF between teaching blocks.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;In The Food Forest PDC you will work on a &lt;strong&gt;major design project of your choice&lt;/strong&gt;. Many of the excellent designs have been implemented around the world.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Whilst many people study permaculture as a design system for their personal and/or professional lives, successful completion of the course will qualify you for a Permaculture Design Certificate which makes you eligible to practice or teach permaculture commercially. The course may also be recognised as relevant prior learning towards the completion of requirements for the nationally accredited VET Certificate IV in Permaculture.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;The Food Forest is a remarkable 20 hectare, certified organic permaculture farm and learning centre that is the result of the passion and vision of owners Graham &amp;amp; Annemarie Brookman. From its buzzing biodiversity come over 150 varieties of organically grown fruit and nuts, wheat and vegetables, honey and carob beans, as well as free range eggs, nursery plants and timber. Most of The Food Forest’s produce is sold at the Adelaide Farmers Market. We’ll be harvesting and eating some of the products during the PDC!&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Broadband and Wi-Fi access is available in the teaching area and accommodation studio.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h3&gt;Teaching and research&lt;/h3&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The farm conducts research into organic growing and climate change adaptation and hosts collections of tree crop varieties representing a unique genetic resource, willingly shared with others wishing to establish sustainable plantings. Valuable information about the hydrogeology of the Adelaide Plain has come from the farm’s scheme to draw floodwater from the Gawler River and recharge the Q4 aquifer underlying the farm, to offset declining water levels and quality.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The Food Forest also has an extensive short courses program which complement the PDC. The property operates as one big teaching area and course participants will be involved in a hands-on permaculture project such as revegetation or garden construction.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;h3&gt;History&lt;/h3&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The heritage-listed, pioneer homestead and much of the history of the farm has been retained. When the Brookmans bought the property in 1986, it was not much more than a bare barley paddock; only a few towering River Red Gums remained along the Gawler River from the time when the Kaurna Aboriginal people camped in their shade and gathered food from the land. The riparian understorey had become a mass of boxthorn, prickly pear and sour sob and the soil was degraded from years of continuous cropping. The indigenous riparian ecosystem has now largely been restored and the revegetation systems developed, have been adopted by other groups.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;h3&gt;Sustainable building technology&lt;/h3&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The old stone barn has been transformed into a Learning Centre for the presentation of courses and workshops. Nearby is the government-approved ‘loo with a view’, a Clivus Multrum composting toilet &amp;amp; reedbed system which transforms human by-products into reeds for mulching, rich compost for fertiliser and saves many thousands of litres of water every year.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Environmentally responsible building technologies are also demonstrated in ‘The Studio’, Cellar-door, an Eco-gazebo, the tiny ‘Cosy Cottage’ and a Coolroom, all of which are constructed with straw bales. The Cob Oven shows the ancient craft of building with special mud mixtures. The extension to the heritage listed homestead is an exemplar of passive solar design using a fusion of straw bale, stone and well-insulated corrugated iron. Rainwater is collected for use in the house; grey and black water is treated by a reedbed system and used in orchard irrigation. Solar panels heat the water and photovoltaic cells provide the house with almost 7kW of green electricity; surplus power is fed into the grid.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Meals are included in the registration and include vegetarian, vegan and omnivorous options. Delicious, healthy, local and in season is important to us! A lot of the food served at the course will be harvested from The Food Forest, including as many varieties of fruit, vegetables and herbs. We have also preserved produce from the different seasons. We don’t produce everything; milk, cheese, bread, grains, pulses, meat will be sourced locally, in many cases direct from the producers. What's more, South Australia's Mediterranean climate enables us to grow the most intensely flavoured and nutritious tree crops in the world.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;This one-day workshop will explore different varieties of stone fruit, citrus, olives, pecan nuts, figs, apples, pistachios and as many other crops as you desire. We will also discuss preserving techniques to stock your pantry for supply through the seasons.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;We've recruited Chris Nuss and Ella McHenry from Little Bunyip Farm to run this workshop to unlock the mystery of converting straw into gourmet food and seeds into vibrant micro-greens, through processes anyone can master.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Chris and Ella wanted to get their small farm at Watervale to quite quickly produce a meaningful income so they could spend family time on the property. Oyster mushrooms &amp;amp; micro-greens seemed to offer quick income turnaround, as well as being delicious and wonderfully healthy. Commercial quantities can be grown just using rainwater from the roof, and farmers markets are a great place to sell them (if you haven't eaten them all!).&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;With a little bit of technical know-how, like mushroom substrate preparation &amp;amp; microgreen growing media, trays and harvesting - that you'll pick up at the course, you'll be eating your own mushrooms within weeks!&lt;/p&gt;

			<description>&lt;p&gt;As demand for certified organic food continues to skyrocket in markets around the World, Australian landholders are beginning to realise the importance of the export markets and growing domestic markets which are now available to certified organic growers. This is a short course to introduce potential growers to the practicalities of organic production.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Data researched by the Queensland Department of Primary Industries shows annual growth in the organic food market of 15% annually in the countries to which Australia exports most food. Trends suggest that the Japanese market will be about $25 billion by 2005, the UK $10 billion. Germany and France will be larger markets than the UK. In Australia growth in the market is desperately hampered by the supply available.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Community opinion has moved steadily against factory farming, genetically engineered food and the unknown contaminant load of conventionally produced foods, particularly in countries affected by eco-disasters and given that food travels by many pathways to the consumer, organically certified produce is gaining acceptance as the only reliably safe food, unless you grow your own or have a direct relationship with a grower.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Prices received for organic produce generally command premiums of 30-100% and many organic growers often receive single requests to export quantities of dried fruit and other foods equivalent to more than their entire annual production.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Becoming a Certified Organic Grower is not a difficult process but there is much to learn about the management of soil fertility, pests and diseases through organic means as well as the regulations governing initial certification and continued registration as a certified grower.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Presenters of the course will explain certification standards and will take participants through an inspection of organic growing systems at The Food Forest, explaining what they are looking for in terms of certification.&lt;/p&gt;
