The Banksia Environmental Awards are recognised as Australias pre-eminent environmental awards. The awards acknowledge excellence, dedication and leadership in various areas that contribute to the environment and a sustainable future.
The Food Forest was a finalist in the 'Business Environmental Responsibility & Leadership Award - for the business or government business enterprise that has demonstrated finest leadership, commitment and excellence in protecting Australias environment and contributing to a sustainable future'.
The property was regarded as - "a model for sustainability. The Food Forest is a family business demonstrating sustainable land use. It offers:
- Organically certified foods
- Education services to universities, schools and the public
- Specialised education in Permaculture including teacher training
- Australias best demonstration site of straw bale building and domestic reedbed technology
Appropriate crops are grown using less than 20% of the normal irrigation water. Efficient equipment has been built to process crops on site and return by-products to the production stream.
Wildlife has been profitably built into the agricultural system. The Food Forest was Australias top organic farm in 2003."
